About this deal

A plasterer from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, he was largely self-taught having read a wide range of literature while on the dole during the Great Depression. His prose style was modelled upon Peg’s Paper (“With a wild cry I sank in a stricken heap” etc), and his ineptitude with words was so great that after wading through two pages of laboured description you could not even be certain what he was attempting to describe.

1900-1983), socialist and novelist Papers of Jack Hilton (1900-1983), socialist and novelist

Orwell’s response to working-class ideas about masculinity and gender roles illustrates the way in which his thought was reshaped by his journey through the north of England. The publication rights to Hilton’s works were long considered lost until their discovery in 2022 allowed for the republication of Caliban Shrieks. The rights to Hilton’s entire works had unknowingly passed to Brian in 1983, along with the rest of Hilton’s worldly belongings from his little flat. If all of them could get their thoughts on to paper they would change the whole consciousness of our race. I found this out from our Mary, Brian’s Mary, who showed me the house in Chadderton where Hilton and his Mary had lived — just around the corner from the Sportsman's Arms.

He recognized that Orwell, a ‘[t]all, ex-officer type, Eton, modest, non-hard-boozing, non hard cursing, non crude gamestering, no locale in the dialect sense’ 38 had found it difficult to gain information from colliers who ‘need one of their Whilst the principles of action can be transhistorical (though not ahistorical), politics itself cannot be abstract; it is necessarily embodied and dynamic, unfolding in specific material and discursive spaces. Nam Thanh Le last spoke to his family a few days before the fire in May, and had previously told them he was living in a mill in "Dam", believed to be Oldham.

For Orwell, Hilton’s choice to earn his living through labour that could have been done equally well by others was a waste of his particular talents.

In an air-conditioned office on the outskirts of Manchester, Anthony Bellamy-Hibbert was doing his best to convince a drunken stranger not to kill himself. Its readers included William Plomer, who had contributed to Michael Roberts’ New Country (1933), a collection Benjamin Kohlmann describes as a ‘founding document of the politicized literature of the 1930s’. The recovery of the work of people such as Hilton is necessary to a more complex understanding of the nineteen-thirties and forties but involves challenges common to any reappraisal of working-class writing. It seemed profoundly unfair to me that his novels have, since his death, been unpublishable — no one has known where the copyrights ended up, and publishers won’t touch a manuscript if it’s not clear who has the legal authority to licence its publication.

He captured the imagination of Orwell and Auden — then he

At my first meeting with Mary, I hand her a brand-new edition of Caliban Shrieks , dedicated to Brian. They were little when he was around and he would sit patiently with them and ask them about their days at school. little puny legs shuffling along up hill at early morn, then bearing a doffing box plus a tired body. Circumstances also restricted their reading; as Fleay notes, although ‘Hilton sent George Orwell a copy of Champion’, his second book, Orwell was in a sanatorium when he received it and his wife, Eileen, told Hilton that ‘while the other men […] had enjoyed reading it, Orwell had been too ill to do so.For seconds, he desperately jabbed his legs at the projectile in the hopes of manoeuvring it back out. He spent two months in the north of England, much of it with miners, and went down three pits, the first of them in Wigan. Critics such as Hynes constructed rather than revealed the dominant image of nineteen-thirties literature, and their narratives demonstrate what Alison Light describes as a persistent ‘obsession with the notion of cultural elites’.
