As with other ingredients, the safety of SLS and SLES all depends on the quantity in which it’s used. Like all other soaps or surfactants, prolonged exposure to high concentrations of SLS and SLES may have an irritant effect. This is even the case with sulfate-free formulas that contain different type of surfactants.

There has been some conversation about the potential dangers of sulfates, with people suggesting they dry hair and skin out. We use sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, to get the right balance of both cleansing and mildness. DON’T JUST TAKE IT FROM US

Some of the materials you’ll read are contradictory and some are misinformed. There’s a lot of misleading info. out there. The problem is that sulfates are found in most mainstream shampoos. Sulfates can be made from coconut oil, but the process isn’t a natural one. The Ziegler Process converts fatty acids to alcohols, with a methyl aluminoxane catalyst. These are then further processed into SLS (…and then into SLES using sulfur trioxide and chlorosulfuric acid) [11]. Not quite the same as extra virgin coconut oil! Our safety scientists ensure we use preservatives within safe-to-use limits – that means we use as little as possible, and as much as needed to be effective. Water, or Aqua – this is used to blend together all the other ingredients. The right balance of water is essential to achieve the perfect shampoo consistency and help it spread throughout the hair. Water used in our shampoos goes through a special process to make it exceptionally pure. DANDRUFF-PREVENTING INGREDIENT We applied these same principles when choosing our best coal tar shampoo.
